What Is Medicare Part D?
Medicare Part D is also known as the Prescription Drug Program and it is just that. This plan helps cover the cost of most outpatient prescription drugs which also include many recommended shots and vaccines. Part D is offered through private insurance companies as a stand-alone plan, those enrolled in Original Medicare, or as a set of benefits that are included with your Medicare Advantage Plan.

It is important to note that you should enroll in Part D when you first get Medicare unless you have a credible drug coverage and will have a special enrollment period. This is recommended, because if you delay enrollment there is a chance that you will have gaps in coverage or enrollment penalties.

Medicare Part D Covers The Following:
Each Part D plan has a list of covered drugs that it covers. The list of covered drugs is called its formulary. It is important to know that if your drug is not on the formulary you may be required to pay out of pocket, file an appeal, or request an exception.

All Part D plans must include at least two drugs from most categories. A drug category is a category of medications that are used to treat the same symptoms or they have similar effects on the body. Plan D must cover all medications in the below categories:

Anticancer drugs (unless covered in Part B)
Anticonvulsive treatments for seizure disorders
Antidepressants
Antipsychotic medications
HIV/AIDS treatments
Immunosuppressant drugs

This plan also cover most vaccines, except for the vaccines that are covered in Part B.

It is important to note that some drugs that are used to treat weight loss or gain, and over-the-counter drugs are explicitly excluded from Medicare Coverage by law.
